It seems like the Universe has guided me to contemplate on the topic of planned obsolescence. In early April I was taking a walk outside. I really enjoy going outside for walks everyday, I notice that after at least a 10 minute walk I feel more energetic and with an improved mood. I also noticed that if I am on a computer for longer than I know I should be and my eyes start feeling imbalanced, going outside for a walk realigns eyesight and improves vision. As I walk I look into various distances to train the eye muscles and have a greater range of vision. To continue, as I was walking and enjoying the fresh air after the rain, I noticed that a pine tree fell on top of a magnolia tree and knocked off a large branch that had many about to bloom pink flowers. I decided to break off some branches from the fallen trees and attempt to propagate them. In that moment I decided to share this experience and make a youtube video, so I decided to come back with my phone and make a video. My phone is about 8 or 9 years old and sometimes the camera decides to glitch. Overall I don’t use my phone to browse the internet and I don’t use any apps, so to make basic calls it works. However, I do like to take photos and videos of nature and that day I was a bit frustrated that my phone camera was not working. There is no reason for it not to work because I have a memory card with plenty of space. I didn’t want to risk going to the fallen tree scene, creating a video, and then it disapearing from my phone when I try to replay it. That is what happens when my camera glitches. So then I remembered that I have several old digital cameras. The problem with those is that one camera takes good videos and pictures, but when you try to review the images the screen does not switch to the review mode. I also have another camera that is not able to take photos or videos, they turn out blurry for some reason, but when you enter a memory card inside it, it has a really nice screen and you can review and delete photos on it. So when combined together, these 2 cameras provide the desired outcome. It just takes an extra step of moving the memory card from one camera to another. I feel that if you have things and you can figure out how to make it work, it might be wise to do that. This way you avoid an extra expense and there is less things in the landfills. To the degree possible at this point in time, society should become more ingenious and force companies to abandon planned obsolescence. Here is the Magnolia Rescue Mission video.
To continue on the topic of planned obsolescence, I also recently saw a video where a lady was sharing tips on how to live life in a more sustainable eco friendly way, and she was recommending that people buy LED light bulbs because they last longer. After hearing this I decided to share my perspective on this: There is an incandescent light bulb in California that has lasted over 100 years. At this point in time, the planned obsolescence of incandescents is likely intentionally designed to push people into LEDs. However, research is showing that “incandescent light produces a continuous, warm full spectrum of light that is similar to natural light and is less disruptive to circadian rhythms. Most LEDs on the other hand, introduce high-frequency flicker or stroboscopic effects that can cause headaches, eye strain, and migraines.” The other day I drove a bunch of stuff to the donation center and after drop off went inside to see if I can find some treasures, and indeed I did. They had a box of 4 brand new incandescent light bulbs for only 99 cents. I bought all 6 boxes; that is 24 bulbs for under 7 dollars. yay. It may be possible that LEDs are like those microfiber towels; seem like a good idea at first glance but after some research end up being quite toxic.
